According to statistics, about 95% of computer owners use a PC while the other 5% opt for an Apple Mac. This could just be down to brand preference. However, let’s consider some other possibilities.

Macs are often favoured by creative types such as graphic designers, musicians, artists, and anyone who likes to be a bit different. And there are those who want to take a stand against what they see as Microsoft’s monopoly and choose Macs for that reason. But perhaps this latter group should consider that, in fact, the Apple Corporation has produced one of the most monopolistic products in the computer industry. This is because Apple is the only manufacturer of Macs, thus they produce both the hardware and the software, so you’re forced to buy from them alone. Microsoft, on the other hand, while being the makers of the much maligned and ridiculed Windows operating system, don’t make computers at all.

Having said that, there is no doubt that while Macs are expensive, they are beautifully put together and immensely fashionable. But their advantages may run a little deeper than the merely superficial. It is commonly heard that they run much faster and more quietly. And Mac admirers say Read the rest of this entry »

Switching to an Apple Mac doesn’t mean you lose access to all your Windows software. In many cases there will be a cheap or open-source alternative, but for those stubborn, hard-to-remove packages you can’t do without, there are still ways to have them around.

The first is Boot Camp. This Apple software, currently in Beta but due to be included with Mac OS X Leopard in Summer 2007, allows you to set aside a section of your Macs hard disk and install Windows XP on it. There are a couple of caveats – your Mac must have an Intel processor (all new ones do), you must have a Windows XP SP2 CD, and you can only run Windows or Mac OS, not both at the same time (you specify which one when your Mac starts). The advantage of Boot Camp is that it installs Windows drivers for the Macs hardware, so an Intel Mac can esaily run many games such as Half Life 2.

The second method is a software package called Parallels. This runs Windows (XP or 2000, or Linux) in a “virtual PC” – Windows appears in a window on your Mac desktop. Your Read the rest of this entry »

What I remember most about school was my grade school principal. He was my knight in shining armour. When my piano teacher recommended that I drop piano lessons because we didn’t have a piano at home, he called me into his office. You can use the piano in the library anytime you want, he said.

How many students have computers at home. They can use the computer in a computer class whenever they sign up for the class. A computer is like a piano. You need to take lessons to learn the keys and the proper sequence of notes to play a song. Otherwise all you are doing is banging away at a keyboard and imagining yourself a player. You are also hurting the piano’s fine tuning and possibly destroying its chords. My principal let me use the piano in the library because he knew that I had taken lessons and that I was qualified to practice on a piano. When a student has taken lessons in computers and becomes qualified in using one, then he can use a computer at school in the library.

The first step in deciding what computer to buy isn’t to memorize a long list of numbers and computer parts, it is to decided what you want to do with your computer. Computers, unlike most things in our modern society are not made to order. Even computers which have identical hardware will soon react differently depending on their software. Those numbers are useful and a great way to help decided if you’re getting a good deal on a computer but they shouldn’t make the decision for you.

There are hundreds of things you can do on a modern computer, but only a few that will really tax the hardware. The two most common things which will tax your computer are gaming and video editing and while they may seem similar in the computer setup they are not identical. If you plan to do either then it is likely that you will want to spend some of your budget on a good video card, but if you are playing video games you will likely want to upgrade other things later as well. The newest video games are continually pushing the limits of computers and as such a computer you buy today, Read the rest of this entry »

Computers freeze a lot if they have too much data or not capable of handling the tasks which you are trying to perform. But there are a lot of things, which you can when a computer freezes.

The first thing you should do is wait for a few minutes. Sometimes the computer is just loading and it might look frozen. If nothing happens after a few minutes, you should press ctrl, delete and alt together. This will open the task manager or the options tab in Windows Vista. Once you open the task manager, you will see a list of tasks, which your computer is running. Close down all the programs by clicking on end task. This way you will reduce the amount of memory the computer is using.

Programs on the computer cause the computer to freeze. That is why ending all tasks is one of the best ways to unfreeze the computer. Another alternative is to switch off the computer through the CPU.

Switching off the computer by removing the power plug may cause you to lose some files, but it shouldn’t be a major problem in most cases. After you switch off the computer, Read the rest of this entry »

computers are the real heroes in today’s world.imagining a world without computers will be similar to life without food.

The abbreviation of computer is C-Commonly O-Operated M-Machines P-Particularly U-Used for T-Trade E-Education and R-Research.

1.computer was invented by Charles Babbage.there are many types of computers and generations of computers.

2. accumulated brains-one amazing feature of computer is that it can store millions of bytes and thus computer can be compared to the brain of 10 human beings. yet , we call computer as a stupid box. it is because , it cannot function on its own. it needs a user to operate and control it.

3. lightning speed and accuracy-next feature is its lightning speed which still more amuses us.it has the ability to perform any hard task within seconds accurately.

4.computers are used in all the places like industry, medicine, engineering fields , media science.they are used in railway reservation, airports etc. it is really impossible to think of a world without computers. it is only because of computers and internet , communication has developed between any knook and corners of the world.

5. there would have been a sad and mad world without computers because computers Read the rest of this entry »

Working memory on a computer is known as RAM. RAM is an acronym for random access memory and its purpose is to store information you are working on and will speed up the access to the programs and files you are using. The more RAM you have the more programs you can open at the same moment and the faster your computer transfers the data.

RAM is a different kind of memory than your hard drive because a hard drive is permanent memory while RAM is more of a temporary kind of memory. When your computer goes off, RAM clears itself, but it is necessary in order to run computer applications.

Many people think adding additional “RAM” to your system makes your computer run faster. RAM means random access memory and while it often makes your computer faster, this isn’t always the case.

The speed depends on the applications you use and how much resources these software programs need. Often when people add more RAM in hopes of speeding up their computer, they become frustrated when they see almost any difference after adding some RAM.

There are several possibilities you can try to Read the rest of this entry »

More dangerous to your computer than hackers, viruses, and worms, is electricity. The tiniest jolt can mean disaster for your computer. When you get a worm or a virus, it only affects the memory of the computer, and at the worst will make you have to format your hardrive, but electricity on the other hand can render your entire system ultimately useless. By now you are probably wondering, “Oh no, another long article.” or maybe, “How do I stop electricity from killing my computer!?!?!”. No need to worry, I am going right to the point of this serious problem that almost every computer in the world is in danger of.

If you have ever had to change a part on your computer, plug in some wires, adjust the CPU fan, or install some extra RAM, you have put your computer at risk. Because static electricity comes primarily from your hands touching a metal part of your computer after shuffling across the carpet/linoleum and turning on your computer. Yes, even pushing your power button can cause a tiny shock to jolt from your hand and into the hardrive of your computer.

The reason this is so dangerous is because your computer translates data Read the rest of this entry »

In the modern era of computing there is almost never a reason to buy the most expensive computer. Thanks to Moore’s Law and the expertise of many many engineers and computer designers computers have continued to double in power approximately every eighteen months. That exponential growth has resulted in a great many improvements but they have also caused a side effect that few of us expected.

Computers are getting powerful faster than our need for that power as average consumers. When computers first came out the doubling of computer power was of great importance because programmers were struggling to do the most basic things with computers. A simple typing program would tax most early computers and there was no way you were going to get a graphical interface. That isn’t the case now. No one would even consider selling a computer which couldn’t run the newest version of windows or the Mac OS, and that means that for 99% of computing the most basic computer is all you need.

The desire to have a better computer is of course still relevant but even that should be tempered by Moore’s law. If computers continue to double ever eighteen months then the far smarter Read the rest of this entry »

I want the latest computer with the fastest processor, the biggest storage, the highest memory, and the biggest screen. This is often on our mind when we want to shop for a new computer. After all, we planned’ to use it for the next 5-10 years, so it will be a worthwhile’ investment now, or so we tell ourselves. But do we really need that latest high end computer? And spend all our hard earned money (or our parent’s) for a machine that hardly ever last us for 3-5 years (some even 1-2 years).

Based on the October 2003 Current Population Survey (CPS) Report on Computer Use and Ownership by the U.S. Census Bureau* the 3 most popular usage of computer at home for those 17 and under are gaming, working on school assignment, and surfing the Internet. Whereas for those 18 and over, the 3 most popular usage of computer at home are surfing the Internet, email, and word processing. So we ask ourselves, do we need the latest and greatest computer system for these tasks? With the exception of those graphics intensive computer games, the rest of the task can be easily accomplish by the old computer that is Read the rest of this entry »
