Laptops are small mobile computers that are light and portable enough to fit on your lap. They weigh usually in the range of 4 to10 pounds depending on the materials, size and other factors. When compared to the PC Desktop, the portable laptops are different on the basis of peripherals and weight. A typical portable laptop computer has a weight of four to five pounds. Some bulkier laptops range in their weights from six to seven pounds as they may have a CDROM/DVDROM or a floppy drive.

Laptops operate typically on a single battery and function similar to their desktop counterparts as the basic components of laptops and desktop computers are same. Laptops have liquid crystal (LCD) displays and uses different RAM modules. A portable notebook or laptop is provided with a pointing stick or touch pad and built-in keyboard as an input device. You can also plug in an external mouse. The power consumption and noise are less compared to a desktop. Unlike desktops, laptops can be run on batteries also.

Osborne 1 was the first available portable computer in 1981 for commercial use. This portable computer weighed about 24 pounds and was available at a price Read the rest of this entry »

According to statistics, about 95% of computer owners use a PC while the other 5% opt for an Apple Mac. This could just be down to brand preference. However, let’s consider some other possibilities.

Macs are often favoured by creative types such as graphic designers, musicians, artists, and anyone who likes to be a bit different. And there are those who want to take a stand against what they see as Microsoft’s monopoly and choose Macs for that reason. But perhaps this latter group should consider that, in fact, the Apple Corporation has produced one of the most monopolistic products in the computer industry. This is because Apple is the only manufacturer of Macs, thus they produce both the hardware and the software, so you’re forced to buy from them alone. Microsoft, on the other hand, while being the makers of the much maligned and ridiculed Windows operating system, don’t make computers at all.

Having said that, there is no doubt that while Macs are expensive, they are beautifully put together and immensely fashionable. But their advantages may run a little deeper than the merely superficial. It is commonly heard that they run much faster and more quietly. And Mac admirers say Read the rest of this entry »

Switching to an Apple Mac doesn’t mean you lose access to all your Windows software. In many cases there will be a cheap or open-source alternative, but for those stubborn, hard-to-remove packages you can’t do without, there are still ways to have them around.

The first is Boot Camp. This Apple software, currently in Beta but due to be included with Mac OS X Leopard in Summer 2007, allows you to set aside a section of your Macs hard disk and install Windows XP on it. There are a couple of caveats – your Mac must have an Intel processor (all new ones do), you must have a Windows XP SP2 CD, and you can only run Windows or Mac OS, not both at the same time (you specify which one when your Mac starts). The advantage of Boot Camp is that it installs Windows drivers for the Macs hardware, so an Intel Mac can esaily run many games such as Half Life 2.

The second method is a software package called Parallels. This runs Windows (XP or 2000, or Linux) in a “virtual PC” – Windows appears in a window on your Mac desktop. Your Read the rest of this entry »

What I remember most about school was my grade school principal. He was my knight in shining armour. When my piano teacher recommended that I drop piano lessons because we didn’t have a piano at home, he called me into his office. You can use the piano in the library anytime you want, he said.

How many students have computers at home. They can use the computer in a computer class whenever they sign up for the class. A computer is like a piano. You need to take lessons to learn the keys and the proper sequence of notes to play a song. Otherwise all you are doing is banging away at a keyboard and imagining yourself a player. You are also hurting the piano’s fine tuning and possibly destroying its chords. My principal let me use the piano in the library because he knew that I had taken lessons and that I was qualified to practice on a piano. When a student has taken lessons in computers and becomes qualified in using one, then he can use a computer at school in the library.

The Apple Mac is now synonymous with beauty, elegance and a synergy with anybogy’s home or office environment. It’s been a long road for it’s CEO, Steve Jobs, who’s had to transform the Company over a short space of 10 years.

It’s begun with the release of the iMac and the Blue and White G3, both of which featured new processors and radical design changes that took them away from the norm of computing in a beige box. Funky colors, novel case designs and cutting edge add-ons gave the mac a leading edge when it came to computers. Pricing structures changed as much as connectivity features, all of which lead to a stupendous rise in sales. Coupled with the iPod, Apple Computer Inc looked set to revolutionize the computer industry, just like it did back in 1984.

In it’s continued rise to power, Apple has changed a number of things in their design, supply and ability to please the consumer. The latest change is just as amazing and has, for some made Apple Macs a household name. The use of Intel Core Duo chips in their latest line of iMacs Read the rest of this entry »

Yippeeee!….I’m in Love

Yes, I think I’m in love…I, who have never had any time for adverts of any kind, who believe they are pesky, interfering things I can easily do without, am in love with the adverts by Apple Mac. They are just brilliant and are saturated everywhere. If nothing else, they are guaranteed to draw attention.

Apple Mac hit upon the idea some time ago of using humans to represent PCs and Macs with awesome appeal! My favourite adverts come in three different types depicting various problems with the PCs while the very ‘cool’ Mac maintains its lofty distance above it all. This is against a backdrop of very pleasing music. I find myself just repeatedly clicking on them, watching and smiling with smug pride. Perhaps it is because I have been a Mac user for over 16 years, I know that Apple Mac is not just talking hot air. Its reliability and professionalism, not to mention support, is legend. The current G5 I am using is out of this world with efficiency, security and simplicity. It does NOT crash, there are NO viruses and the smooth integration with other stuff means that one does not have to be a Read the rest of this entry »

Laptops are meant for people always on the go. People who cant help but keep in touch with work and certain work obligations even when they have to take a holiday. Personally I feel this has been one of the best things to happen to us businessmen, we don’t have to conform out office work to the four-walled cabin and work whenever we want and wherever we want.

I personally enjoy taking my laptop on vacations too. Well, I know it’s a bit over the top when it comes to spending time with family, but people like me who have to be in touch with overseas clients don’t really have an option but take the mini office along wherever we go. Whether it is using my notebook desk or my notebook computer desk, I have now come up with a brilliant idea of using a laptop desk for mounting my notebook laptop whenever I am in a hotel or at home.

I am lately accustomed to using variant laptop accessories, its unbelievable how companies have come up with accessories for portable laptop desk, computer laptop desk as well as a laptop computer stand. May it be assembled or a one-piece laptop desk, Read the rest of this entry »

Your computer is as slow as molasses. Your mouse freezes every 15 minutes, and that Microsoft Word program just won’t seem to open.

You might have a virus.

Just what exactly is a virus? What kind is in your computer? How did it get there? How is it spreading and wreaking such havoc? And why is it bothering with your computer anyway?

Viruses are pieces of programming code that make copies of themselves, or replicate, inside your computer without asking your explicit written permission to do so. Forget getting your permission down on paper. Viruses don’t bother to seek your permission at all! Very invasive.

In comparison, there are pieces of code that might replicate inside your computer, say something your IT guy thinks you need. But the code spreads, perhaps throughout your office network, with your consent (or at least your IT guy’s consent). These types of replicating code are called agents, said Jimmy Kuo, a research Read the rest of this entry »

The first step in deciding what computer to buy isn’t to memorize a long list of numbers and computer parts, it is to decided what you want to do with your computer. Computers, unlike most things in our modern society are not made to order. Even computers which have identical hardware will soon react differently depending on their software. Those numbers are useful and a great way to help decided if you’re getting a good deal on a computer but they shouldn’t make the decision for you.

There are hundreds of things you can do on a modern computer, but only a few that will really tax the hardware. The two most common things which will tax your computer are gaming and video editing and while they may seem similar in the computer setup they are not identical. If you plan to do either then it is likely that you will want to spend some of your budget on a good video card, but if you are playing video games you will likely want to upgrade other things later as well. The newest video games are continually pushing the limits of computers and as such a computer you buy today, Read the rest of this entry »
